Fire and Frosts - Mrs H hits the local headlines
The Austrians are first learners. This year we received an advanced weather warning of expected frosts over the nights 19th and 21st of April and Hoepler along with many local wineries rallied together to limit the damage to our vines.
Hundreds of hay bales were placed strategically around the vineyards into the wind to create as much smoke as possible.
The smoke acts as a barrier between the rays of the morning sun and the cold vines and should slow down any speedy ‘de-thawing’ which is what causes such dramatic damage.
It was a mad experience. The night skies were filled with red fires for as far as the eye could see. Our Hoepler team worked through the night monitoring the fires and fire engines stormed up and down the main roads, blue lights flashing, reassuring passing drivers that everything was under control. Fortunately they were not needed but an opportune reporter did snap Mrs H taking part of the action, which hit the headlines of the BVZ local newspaper– what a change from her former life in the city!
