Happy Birthday, Jost Höpler 80!
Jost Hoepler – Christof’s father and founder of the Hoepler business we know today is a sprightly 80 years old today. A big mile stone and a day to reflect on all the amazing things he has achieved. This is a man who has lived life to the full and many of you were not around to know that he was at the cutting edge of wine as it internationalised in the 1970’s and 80’s.
Jost cut his teeth in France working in Burgundy, Bordeaux, Champagne and Italy’s Alto Adige. Later he spent several years working in Australia and as a young thing shared a house with Peter Wall, later to became the famous head wine maker at Yalumba in the Barossa Valley. His dear friend Peter Lehman, a legend in Australian wine, and Wolf Blass spent much time ‘tasting’ with them at their home and were often known to stay overnight when it was no longer sensible to drive home!
On returning home to Austria, Jost was one of the first Austrian Wine makers to export Austrian wine to the US and Asia. He played an important role in spreading the word of the, then barely known but delicious, Gruener Velltiner grape. People still talk of his 1981 Ausbruch Noble Reserve which won 99 points.
Jost still has a thick head of hair, can be found regularly on the slopes skiing between the months of December and April, climbs hills and kayaks with his grandchildren. Of course true to form if there is a moment of still you will still find him driving down to the winery, filing the car with samples and visiting customers across the country. If there was ever proof that the quality of the wine is a key ingredient to a long and healthy life, this must be it. Thank you for the enrichment you bring to our lives Jost.
